MY STORY

HOPEFULLY BY NOW YOU KNOW WHAT I DO, BUT I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT YOU KNOW WHY I DO IT. FIRST, LET ME PAINT A PICTURE FOR YOU OF WHAT MY LIFE USED TO CONSIST OF: NOT HAVING A CARE ABOUT ANYTHING. THIS WAS TRUE WHEN IT CAME TO THE OPINION OF OTHERS AS MUCH AS WHAT I WAS EATING EVERY SINGLE DAY. I WAS AN ATHLETE MAJORITY OF MY LIFE AND SOCCER WAS MY SPORT OF CHOICE. MY MOTTO THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE WAS TO EAT WHATEVER I WANT AND THEN JUST BURN IT OFF DURING A GAME OR PRACTICE. BY THE LOOKS OF IT, YOU’D THINK THIS WAS WORKING OUT VERY WELL FOR ME. AND TO BE HONEST, I THINK IF I CONTINUED DOWN THAT PATH OF NOT CARING ABOUT WHAT I WAS EATING, I WOULD STILL LIVE TO 100 AND BE PERFECTLY FINE.

LONG STORY SHORT, I MOVED BACK IN WITH MY PARENTS AFTER GRADUATING COLLEGE. IT WAS DURING THIS TIME WHERE I WAS TRYING TO REALLY FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO WITH MY LIFE SINCE I HAD JUST BEEN REJECTED FROM ALL MY PA SCHOOL APPLICATIONS. I HAD A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH MY GRANDMA, WHO WAS 83 AT THE TIME, AND WAS FORTUNATE TO SPEND A LOT MORE TIME WITH HER WHILE I WAS HOME. MY GRANDMA WAS LIKE THE TYPICAL GRANDMA, DRINKING HER COFFEE WITH 4 SCOOPS OF SUGAR & CREAMER, COOKING EVERYTHING IN LARD, AND MAKING SURE SOME TYPE OF PASTRY WAS SERVED WITH EVERY MEAL. MY GRANDMA WAS ONE OF A KIND AND SHE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE FOR HER AGE, DRIVING HERSELF TO BINGO MULTIPLE TIMES PER WEEK AND WALKING UP TO THE MCDONALDS FOR A CUP OF COFFEE WITH A FRIEND.

MY GRANDMA WAS ON SEVERAL MEDICATIONS & ONE DAY HER MEDICAL PROVIDERS MADE A CHANGE TO THEM. EVER SINCE THAT DAY MY GRAMS WAS NEVER THE SAME. HER HEALTH STARTED TO QUICKLY DECLINE AND WE HAD TO MOVE HER IN WITH MY PARENTS SO THAT WE COULD TAKE CARE OF HER. WATCHING THIS INSTANT SWITCH IN HER HEALTH, I STARTED TO THINK THAT THERE HAD TO BE ANOTHER WAY. THERE HAD TO BE OTHER OPTIONS THAN JUST RELYING ON A HANDFUL OF PILLS EVERY DAY. THIS WAS WHERE MY INTEREST IN NUTRITION BEGAN.

I QUICKLY DECIDED THAT PA SCHOOL WAS NOT THE PATH I WANTED TO GO DOWN. NUTRITION HAD TO BE MY CAREER. I SAW MY GRANDMA RELIANT ON MEDICATION AND NOT MAKING HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES AND DIDN’T WANT THIS TO BE ME SOMEDAY.

I PICKED UP THE BOOK “FOOD OVER MEDICINE” BY PAM POPPER AND READ IT COVER TO COVER IN A FEW DAYS. I READ SEVERAL STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAD TAKEN CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH SIMPLY BY MAKING BETTER FOOD CHOICES. I ENROLLED IN A NUTRITION PROGRAM AND AFTER BECOMING A CERTIFIED NUTRITION EDUCATOR WENT RIGHT TO WORK WITH HELPING OTHERS GET STARTED ON A PLANT-BASED DIET.

PLANT-BASED PREGNANCY + PARENTING

SO NOW FAST FORWARD TO 2016 WHEN I FIRST FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT. I’LL SPARE SOME LENGTHY DETAILS, BUT AT 13 WEEKS PREGNANT I WAS TOLD BY THE DOCTOR THAT I HAD A HEMMORHAGE OUTSIDE THE PLACENTA. ONE DOCTOR HAD TOLD ME & MY HUSBAND TO EXPECT THE WORST AND THAT THERE WAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE WE WOULD LOSE OUR BABY. GETTING A SECOND OPINION (& A NEW DOCTOR) HE HAD TOLD US THIS IS NORMAL AND THAT I COULD STILL HAVE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY. FOR 1 MONTH I HAD TO DO VERY LITTLE AND FOCUS ON PUTTING ONLY GOOD THINGS IN MY BODY. I PUT 100% EFFORT INTO EATING ENTIRELY PLANT-BASED SINCE I HAD TIME OFF WORK AND WASN’T ALLOWED TO EXERCISE.

WHEN I WENT BACK IN TO SEE MY DOCTOR 30 DAYS LATER, THE HEMMORHAGE WAS COMPLETELY GONE. NOW I CAN’T POINT THE FINGER AND SAY THAT MY DIET MADE IT MAGICALLY DISAPPEAR, BUT NUTRITION PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN MY HEALTHY PREGNANCY.

I CONTINUED ON EATING ENTIRELY PLANT-BASED, AND ALLOWED MYSELF TO GIVE IN WHEN THE FRENCH FRY CRAVINGS KICKED IN. I WOULD WORK OUT 4-5X PER WEEK, BOUNCING BETWEEN BARRE AND HEATED YOGA.

I READ ALL THE BOOKS TELLING ME WHAT NUTRIENTS MY BABY NEEDED AT THIS POINT IN HIS DEVELOPMENT AND WOULD EAT THE RECOMMENDED FOODS. I ENDED MY PREGNANCY DELIVERING MY SON WYATT 10 DAYS EARLY, A HEALTH 5LBS 6OZ. I FINISHED PUTTING ON JUST OVER 18 POUNDS.

I WAS ABLE TO BREASTFEED WYATT THE FIRST 5 MONTHS AND THEN HAD TO SWITCH HIM ON TO BOTTLES. HE’S BEEN EATING PREDOMINATELY PLANT-BASED AND HASN’T HAD A SINGLE BITE OF MEAT TO THIS DAY.

THE PAST 18 MONTHS HAVE BEEN COMPLICATED, CHALLENGING AND SO REWARDING WHEN IT COMES TO PROVIDING FOR WYATT. I’VE SEEN THE IMPACT FOOD CHOICES CAN HAVE ON HIS BEHAVIOR AND I’VE NOW GOT SOME EXPERIENCE UNDER MY BELT.
